We’re going to be doing a series of ‘Spotlight On’ features, serving up some useful information about some of our expert solicitors here at Ison Harrison. This month’s Spotlight is on our Garforth branch manager, Emma Beddoe.
Emma Beddoe is the perfect example of how a career working in law can be both challenging and nerve-racking, but brings with it also a very rewarding sense of responsibility. Emma is a very recognisable face in Garforth, on the outskirts of Leeds, and takes her recent appointment as manager of Ison Harrison’s Garforth branch as a great honour within her community.
Having joined Ison Harrison in February 2004 at the Garforth office, Emma modestly describes her position now as a solicitor specialising in family law, but fails to reference the fact that she is also a member of the Law Society Specialist Children Panel, an accredited member of Resolution and a trained collaborative lawyer with expertise in divorce, ancillary relief and children & care work.
In the 12 years that Emma has worked for Ison Harrison a lot has changed, not least with the organisation expanding as a law firm across the wider West Yorkshire region, but Emma notes her area of law has also developed quite a bit:
Family law has become ever more bureaucratic and specialised. The loss of legal aid has removed access to justice to a large sector of society.
This is a widely-held viewpoint across the legal sector and highlights Emma’s perceptive sense of community spirit.
Emma also cites the increasing reliance on technology as an evolving factor in the legal sector, something she clearly sees as a challenge given that she claims grappling with technology is “a stretch for a Luddite like me!”
But Emma is not averse to facing challenges, stating that juggling a fee-earning profession with managing a busy branch office is the most difficult aspect of her job, but she uses the nervous adrenalin of providing legal representation as a huge motivating factor.
Indeed, the best advice Emma has ever been given is that “when the last butterfly leaves your stomach, give up advocacy!”
It is Emma’s specialist knowledge of childrens’ cases that perhaps offers the most insight into her personality.
Clearly Emma is a central figure in her community and she claims that “representing children in care proceedings” is the most rewarding aspect of her job. This is as a result of many successful cases over the years, and outlines the compassionate and sympathetic approach all our legal staff take across the board at Ison Harrison.
Emma is a hugely popular and successful member of the Ison Harrison team, clearly demonstrated by the fact that her three favourite things about working for the company are “the Garforth office, my colleagues across the firm and the support given to me by management”.
Away from the office Emma clearly likes to unwind in the great outdoors, she helps a work colleague look after three horses and enjoys hill-walking and travelling in her spare time. And in addition to that, if Emma wasn’t a lawyer working for Ison Harrison (heaven forbid……) she would like to be “working outdoors either running a farm or working for a national park/National Trust as a ranger”.
You couldn’t pick a more contrasting environment to the cut and thrust of where Emma currently excels, but certainly this is evidence of why Emma, as a well-rounded, articulate and passionate member of the Ison Harrison team, is typical of the standard of staff we have at every level, and are extremely proud of.
