On 27th September 2022, the BBC reported that hundreds of people are to be recalled at Walsall Manor Hospital following shoulder surgery by Mian Munawar Shah.
It has been reported that up to 600 patients are being recalled following concerns over shoulder operations undertaken by Mr Shah. Some patients have lost use of their arm after surgery and others have been left in constant pain, with some patients also found to have unnecessary operations.
In 2020, Walsall Healthcare Trust contacted the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) which carried out a general review of surgery and then conducted a further review into Mr Shah’s individual work. A recall of his patients was recommended by the RCS.
Mr Shah has since been suspended and hundreds of letters have been sent to patients who may have been affected. Many patients are questioning why Mr Shah was able to continue to operate, as there were 21 medical negligence claims made between 2010 and 2019 relating to Mr Shah’s surgery.
