Between 1961 and 1987, Medomsley Detention Centre in County Durham was intended to provide short-term rehabilitation for young men aged 16 to 21. Instead, it became the site of one of the most serious institutional abuse scandals in the UK. Thousands of vulnerable young people were subjected to sustained physical and sexual abuse by officers employed to safeguard them.

Recent investigations and renewed public attention have brought this history to the forefront once more. As a leading law firm with extensive expertise in abuse and institutional negligence claims, we at Ison Harrison are committed to supporting survivors in securing justice and fair compensation.

What Happened at Medomsley?

Medomsley was operated by the Ministry of Justice, previously under the Home Office. Rather than receiving rehabilitation, many detainees experienced systematic and brutal abuse from staff, inflicted over several decades. Investigations later confirmed that this abuse was widespread, organised, and enabled by serious failures in oversight and accountability.

A number of former officers have since been prosecuted and imprisoned for their actions. Following the investigations, the Government issued a formal apology acknowledging the horrifying and deeply shameful abuse carried out at the centre and recognising the lasting trauma endured by survivors.

The Government Compensation Scheme

In response to the findings, the Government Legal Department introduced a dedicated compensation scheme for Medomsley survivors. The intention was to provide an accessible route to redress without the need for lengthy legal proceedings. This streamlined process has already provided compensation to more than 2,700 survivors, with over £7 million paid in damages. The scheme remains open to those who have not yet come forward.

While the scheme focuses on physical abuse, our team can also assist those who suffered sexual abuse or other forms of mistreatment that fall outside its scope.

Leadership and Expertise at Ison Harrison

Solicitor Alistair Smith, who recently joined the Ison Harrison Inquest, Abuse and Personal Injury team, played a central role in establishing the Medomsley compensation scheme. Alistair led the steering group and was instrumental in forming the scheme in collaboration with the Government Legal Department. His direct involvement places him in a uniquely informed position to assist survivors with clarity and insight.

Alistair is available to speak confidentially with survivors of Medomsley and with individuals who suffered abuse at other similar institutions. This includes Kirklevington Detention Centre, where Cleveland Police are currently undertaking comparable investigations.

How We Support Survivors

Our specialist abuse team understands both the legal and emotional challenges faced by those who come forward. We offer a confidential, empathetic, and highly experienced service, helping survivors to:

  • Understand their eligibility under the compensation scheme
  • Gather and present the necessary evidence
  • Navigate the process with clarity and reassurance
  • Secure fair and appropriate compensation

We provide a free initial consultation and act on a no win, no fee basis, ensuring that financial concern does not stand in the way of justice.

It Is Not Too Late to Seek Justice

Although the events occurred many decades ago, the compensation scheme remains active, and survivors continue to come forward. Many individuals have lived with the impact of the abuse for most of their lives, often believing that nothing could be done. With professional support, recognition and closure remain possible.

If you or someone you know was detained at Medomsley between 1961 and 1987 and suffered abuse, we encourage you to speak with us in confidence.
