The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) registers Lasting Powers of Attorney – an important mechanism that enables you to nominate someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf should you lack the capacity to do so yourself in

future.

The property and finance LPA allows you to appoint someone to look after your financial affairs and the personal welfare LPA lets you grant an attorney authority over such matters as health care and the kind of treatment you receive.

There are safeguards in place to make sure LPAs are not abused. These safeguards are overseen by the OPG.

Mr Eccles said: “I am looking forward to leading an organisation which is so focused on the people it exists to serve.

“Losing your mental capacity through illness or injury is
traumatic enough. This organisation plays a vital role in helping people plan proactively for a time when they may not be able to make decisions themselves.”
