Today we’re chatting to Jessica Hudson, an Associate Solicitor based at our Huddersfield branch.
How long have you worked at Ison Harrison?
Almost five years. I started working at Ison Harrison in April 2019 as a newly qualified solicitor.
Where did you work previously?
I completed my training contract at a firm in Wakefield but I also worked as a paralegal at a firm in Newcastle after I finished my degree there.
Describe your day-to-day role
In one word – busy! I deal with all areas of family law so I spend a lot of time at Court representing clients. When I’m in the office, I’m usually preparing applications, drafting statements, liaising with other solicitors and experts or generally progressing matters on behalf of my clients.
What is the most interesting part of your job?
Every case is different and no two days are the same. I’m certainly never bored!
What do you find most challenging about your job?
Managing people’s expectations and emotions in what are often very difficult circumstances.
What’s the most useful piece of advice you have been given in your career?
Less is more.
What do you like doing in your spare time?
I always have a new hobby which tends to last for about six weeks before I’m distracted by something else – at the moment I’m trying to learn German. I play netball every week in a local league and I enjoy going to the gym if I have time after a long day at work. I also love travelling and a good holiday!
Any interesting / little known facts about you?
I’m a big fan of Mafia films and Cold War spy novels. My go-to holiday read is anything by John Le Carre.
What does Ison Harrison being 100% employee-owned mean to you?
Law firms can sometimes have a reputation for being quite toxic work environments. That sort of atmosphere doesn’t exist at Ison Harrison because we’re employee-owned; everyone is valued for their contributions to the firm regardless of job title, level of experience or level of responsibility. Everyone has a vested interest in the firm’s success.
