Today we have the pleasure of sitting down with John Goodwin who has been recognised nationally for his exceptional work in Criminal law. John joined Ison Harrison in July 2024 following the merger with Cohen Cramer.

Here, we find out more about John’s legal life and the accolades and achievements he is most proud of.

Hi John, can you tell us about your role at Ison Harrison?

I specialise in Criminal law and also do a great deal of fraud and economic crime. I am also one of the very few solicitors nationally who specialises in Animal Welfare law.

I also do civil property and asset seizure work.

What is the most interesting part of your job?

The most interesting part of my job is dealing with people from all walks of life and the human interaction.

What do you find most challenging about your job?

Perhaps the most challenging area is embracing constant technological changes and managing large volumes of work but I enjoy the challenges!

What awards / accreditations are you most proud of?

I am featured in the Chambers and Partners rankings in Band 1, which is a definitive mark of excellence across the legal industry. It is also an important resource for clients and work referrers. To achieve such a high ranking is an honour and suggests that others in the economic crime community appreciate my work.

As far as awards are concerned, I think being in the Hall of Fame in Legal 500 was the best one.

What’s the most useful piece of advice you have been given in your career?

The best piece of advice I ever received was that you never get into trouble for being early!

What do you like doing in your spare time?

In my spare time I enjoy the gym, playing the piano and guitar, sending time with my kids and grandkids plus reading and watching all sports but particularly Leeds Rhinos!

Any interesting / little known facts about you?

I was once on stage with Queen and I had a piano lesson with the world-famous classical pianist Louis Kentner, but most of all my wife and I have 3 wonderful children and 6 grandchildren.

What does IH being 100% employee-owned mean to you?

As an employee-owned firm, I believe this gives people an emotional investment in the company and helps us all strive for the best results for our clients.
