Starting 18 November 2025, Companies House will begin implementing mandatory identity verification for company directors and people with significant control (PSCs) under the UK’s corporate transparency reforms under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023.
How have we got here?
This requirement is designed to strengthen the integrity of the Companies House register and reduce the risk of fraudulent activity. Currently information filed at Companies House is not independently verified and so ensuring that individuals setting up, running, or controlling companies are who they claim to be, the government aims to foster greater trust in UK businesses and improve the quality of the data filed at Companies House.
Who Must Verify?
From 18 November, all newly appointed directors must verify their identity before they can incorporate a company or be added to an existing one. Existing directors will be required to confirm their identity verification when submitting their next annual confirmation statement. PSCs must also verify their identity within a 14-day window, depending on their registration status and whether they also serve as directors.
The rollout will span a 12-month transition period, allowing companies time to adjust. For example, if a company’s confirmation statement is due on 31 March 2026, all directors must be verified by that date. Companies House estimates that between six and seven million individuals will need to complete the process by mid-November 2026.
How to Verify
There are two main routes for identity verification:
- GOV.UK One Login: This free online service guides users through a secure identity verification process. Once verified, individuals receive a personal code to use when filing confirmation statements or incorporating companies.
- Authorised Corporate Service Providers (ACSPs): Individuals may also choose to verify their identity through an ACSP, such as a solicitor or accountant. This option is available internationally, provided the ACSP is registered with Companies House.
Once verified, individuals must include their personal code and a verification statement for each company role they hold. If this information is missing, Companies House will reject the filing.
What Happens Next?
Companies House will contact registered companies with guidance on how to comply. Directors and PSCs will be able to check the register for identity verification deadlines associated with their roles. Companies are encouraged to begin the verification process early to avoid delays or disruptions to filings.
