In an increasingly digital world, traditional paper processes are being replaced by faster, more efficient alternatives. One of the most widely adopted digital tools for signing documents electronically is Docusign and it is quickly becoming an essential part of modern conveyancing transactions.
What is Docusign?
Docusign is a cloud-based electronic signature (e-signature) platform that enables individuals and organisations to send, sign, and manage documents securely online. Instead of posting or emailing paperwork, users can complete all these steps electronically at the touch of a button.
How do I use Docusign?
Your solicitor or conveyancer will send you an email which will contain all the necessary documents and a link to Docusign. All you have to do is follow the link which will then take you to the Docusign website where you will be prompted to input a passcode, sent to your mobile number, to verify your identity. Once accepted, you will be able to read, sign and add any additional information, if required. All this can be done on your device.
Once you have completed the documents the solicitor will then get a notification confirming this and allow them instant access to the signed documents.
If your document requires a witness, you will be asked, at the point of signing, to provide their details, and they will receive the same link allowing them to complete their part of the document. If you make an error inputting your witness details, simply contact your solicitor or conveyancer and they will be able to manually correct the details.
What are the benefits to me and my transaction of using Docusign?
- Accessibility – Documents can be sent instantly and signed within minutes, regardless of location. From my experience this has been essential in transactions where the clients may not be living together or may not even be even in the same country. With Docusign, our clients can view and sign all their documents easily and at the click of a button.
- Speed – With Docusign there are no postal delays; you have instant access to your documents, and an immediate and direct transfer to your representative leaves zero risk of important legal documents getting lost in the post
- Tracking – With Docusign we can see what is outstanding, and who hasn’t signed what document and, as such, we can provide accurate and regular updates allowing your transaction to progress efficiently and effectively.
- Sustainability – Docusign is completely paperless which means that by using it you are helping support greener working practices and helping to leave a positive impact on the environment.
Docusign represents a major improvement over the traditional paper-based signature process. Its ability to accelerate signing makes it particularly valuable in conveyancing, where timing and document control are crucial. By adopting Docusign, we can deliver transactions more efficiently and speed up the path from you making an offer to picking up the keys to your new property.
