Ison Harrison Solicitors are pleased to announce that we will be sponsoring the drinks reception at the Proud of Barnsley Awards which will be taking place on 18th November 2022 at the Barnsley Metrodome.

What are the Proud of Barnsley Awards?

The awards are a fantastic opportunity for the people of Barnsley to come together as a community, to shine a light on those who go the extra mile to help others.

All of the nominees deserve recognition for their selflessness, determination and dedication. It’s heart-warming to see so many people who contribute to making a difference for the people of Barnsley.

Finalists have been shortlisted for the following categories;

  • Charity fundraiser
  • Charity fundraising team
  • Charity of the year
  • Children’s champion
  • Community group
  • Community hero
  • Exceptional achievement
  • Hospital hero
  • Love where you live
  • School of the year
  • Sporting achievement
  • Triumph over adversity
  • Young superstar

Three finalists have been shortlisted in each category and a winner will be selected at the awards.

What does it mean to Ison Harrison to be a sponsor of the event?

We asked Abbie Churchill, Family Solicitor and Barnsley Branch Manager what it means to be sponsoring the event, here is what she had to say:

“Barnsley’s Ison team are mainly born and bred here and as a result know how significant the awards are in our community. It is our absolute pleasure and privilege to support these awards which reward the most deserving, but those that do not always get the recognition they should. The Barnsley team will be out in force on the night cheering everyone on!”

Sponsoring the drinks reception and attending the event was of personal importance to Sally Child of our Barnsley branch who was thrilled to see that her friend Megan and her family have made the shortlist for this year’s Proud of Barnsley awards in the Triumph Over Adversity category. Sally has known Megan for years and is very proud of what she and her family have been able to achieve with the fundraising they have done.

sally child and meganThe family began fundraising in memory of Megan’s much loved and missed sister Hannah, who lost her battle with cancer. Sadly, Hannah died on 25 April 2021 at Barnsley Hospice just seven weeks after giving birth to her second child because a doctor ‘misinterpreted’ a report following the removal of a cancerous polyp in 2012. Her family will always be immensely grateful to the service that supported Hannah in her final weeks and in a bid to show their gratitude they set about fundraising.

Initially they raised more than £35,000 which was split between Jessops and Barnsley Hospice, as well as the Ambulance Wish Foundation who facilitated a trip to Scarborough where Hannah spent the day with her husband Andrew and their young son.

Hannah’s family and friends recently completed the Great North Run raising £3,800 for the charity Mummy’s star who provided Hannah and her family with support. They are pleased that the money raised will help so many other women and families who are diagnosed with cancer in and around pregnancy.

Mummy’s star also gifted Hannah memory boxes for her children. The memory-making kits provided include activity books, a journal, voice recorder and teddy. It allows mums to leave precious memories for their child(ren) to cherish when they are no longer around.

Megan said:

“It was a lovely surprise when Ison Harrison who are representing Andrew, Hannah’s husband told us that they were sponsoring the drinks reception at the award ceremony so that they could be there to support us on the night. It will be an emotional but special evening.”

What does it mean to be nominated for a Proud of Barnsley Award?

Megan popped into our Barnsley branch this week to meet with Abbie and Sally when discussing the nomination she explained that initially she was shocked, but it was a lovely surprise to have been nominated.

As a family they will be forever grateful to the services that supported Hannah in her final weeks and they wanted to be able to repay some of that gratitude by fundraising.

The Great North Run was a daunting challenge for them to undertake as they had never ran anywhere near that distance before and they had to fit in training around family life and young children. They knew it would be tough but after watching Hannah suffer as she did and show such remarkable strength after her diagnosis, they agreed that it was nothing in comparison and they could do it.

Megan said:

“The money raised after we lost Hannah was because of who she was and how loved and popular she was. Being nominated is lovely because it keeps Hannah’s memory alive and it will be a lovely evening to remember her as a family and show everyone how proud we are of her.”
