The West Yorkshire Pathfinder scheme is setting a new standard for how family courts operate. The scheme aims to improve the court experience and outcomes for children and families involved in private law proceedings. The model does this in a number of ways—by centring the voice of the child; by bringing all agencies involved in family justice together in a problem solving approach to resolution
At Ison Harrison, we’re proud to support initiatives like this that aim to deliver meaningful, lasting change for families across the region.
What is the West Yorkshire Pathfinder?
Launched as a collaboration between the Family Justice Board, local authorities, CAFCASS, the family courts, and key stakeholders in the region, the West Yorkshire Pathfinder is a pilot programme running across Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and the Huddersfield area.
Pathfinder has been piloted in Dorset, Wales and Birmingham and West Yorkshire is the largest area to test the model. It will transform how private law family cases such as disputes over child arrangements are handled from 03 June 2025.
A Child-Focused Approach
At the heart of the scheme is a child focused approach that ensures children are no longer passive in decisions that directly affect them. The Child Impact Report, prepared in the proceedings allows the court to understand a child’s unique needs, wishes, and lived experience. This crucial document helps ensure professionals are listening to their view and making informed decisions based on individual circumstances.
Reduced Delay and Better Outcomes
One of the key goals of the Pathfinder is reduced delay in private law cases. By streamlining processes and providing earlier interventions, families can access resolutions more quickly – a critical improvement for all involved, especially children. The introduction of Case Progression Officers helps manage timelines and avoid unnecessary adjournments, supporting smoother case journeys and by engaging with unrepresented parents to understand the proceedings.
A Problem-Solving Framework
The problem solving approach embedded in the Pathfinder encourages non-adversarial, cooperative solutions. Where appropriate, it promotes out-of-court agreements and supports separated parents to build workable arrangements without prolonged litigation.
This is further supported by the introduction of a Gatekeeping and One Decision Hearing model, which assesses each case early on and determines the most appropriate next steps. This helps reduce unnecessary court time, while ensuring urgent or complex cases receive the appropriate attention from the outset.
A Multi-Agency Collaboration
The scheme is also a powerful example of multi-agency collaboration, with a wide range of professionals—including social workers, domestic abuse specialists, and legal advisors—working together to support the family. This joined-up approach leads to more complete support for both parents and children.
Extra Support for Victims of Domestic Abuse
Recognising the complexities of cases involving domestic abuse, the West Yorkshire Pathfinder includes additional support for victims of domestic violence. This includes better signposting to services, trauma-informed court processes, and safer pathways for survivors to engage with the legal system.
Why This Matters
The West Yorkshire Pathfinder is more than just a procedural trial—it represents a major shift in how family cases are delivered. It champions the idea that the family court system can, and should, be responsive, empathetic, and above all, centred on the child.
At Ison Harrison, our private law family law team welcomes this new direction. We understand how challenging family disputes can be, and we believe that children’s voices should always be heard, respected, and protected. If you’re navigating child arrangements or a family dispute, our team is here to offer expert guidance aligned with these progressive changes.
