He had been riding his mountain bike along an approved track that went through woods and included lots of twists, turns and jumps. As he was travelling downhill, he took a relatively small jump and when he landed, his right handlebar snapped.

The boy went flying over the handlebars and his body hit the ground with a hard impact. He injured his hand and suffered bruising to his knees, elbows, right thigh, hip and shoulder.

He had to go to hospital where his fingers were put in a splint. He missed a week of school and wasn’t able to enjoy his summer holidays because he couldn’t take
part in his usual hobbies.

The injuries healed within six weeks but the scars were expected to take between one and two years to fade. It was also likely that the grip strength in the boy’s hand woul
d remain lower than it had been prior to the accident.

The boy’s parents were self-employed and they needed to take time off work to look after him.

They brought a claim against the manufacturers of the bike, who admitted
liability. The boy was awarded £5,000 in an out-of-court settlement to
compensate for his pain, suffering and loss of amenity.
